Little girl with head on moms bellyDuring pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes numerous changes to accommodate her growing baby. As the baby develops, the mother’s center of gravity shifts to the front of her pelvis, resulting in added stress in the lower back and the joint of the pelvis. At the peak of pregnancy, as a result of the associated weight gain, the curve in the lower back increases and can cause serious impact on the vertebral joints, sacrum and the hip joints, causing increasing discomfort.

If previous spinal misalignment issues and back pain exist prior to pregnancy, pregnancy can often aggravate that condition. Pregnancy can cause the spine to become misaligned to the point that it does not simply go back into place once pregnancy is complete. This can make the tasks that are essential once the baby is born, such as breastfeeding, bending, lifting and carrying the infant on the front or back of the body painfully difficult.

How often Should I Come in for Care?

During pregnancy, Dr. Denny usually sees pregnant patients three times a week for two to four weeks until the tissues regenerate to hold the joints in the right place after she’s adjusted.

Sometimes, later in their pregnancy, because of the weight distribution, they might need to be checked more frequently, such as once a week until the baby is born. As every patient is different, however, the frequency of care will also be different.

Dr. Denny sees pregnant women until the day of labor and during the postpartum period. Some patients even come in when they’re in labor, just to ensure everything is functioning properly.
NEW PATIENTS

Dr. Denny can provide safe and effective care through pregnancy and in the postpartum period. There are specialized chiropractic techniques to address issues that come along with pregnancy.

Some babies present in what is called breech presentation that would cause the need for a cesarean section. Dr. Denny is well versed in the Webster Turning Technique as she was taught by Dr. Warry Webster, MD, the creator of the technique while she studied at Chiropractic college.

With gentle pelvic adjustments and soft tissue work, Dr. Denny has assisted many pregnant women turn their babies from the breech presentation to head down, allowing them to have a healthy, safe and natural birth.

It may be hard to believe that a child could benefit from chiropractic care. Children don’t complain of ongoing discomfort like adults do and their bodies appear to be like rubber and they bounce back from injury. Children’s bodies are under a lot of stress. They are in the process of miraculous development and keeping them healthy requires care and maintenance.

Stress and trauma to the body and spine commonly start with the birthing process. An infant’s spine can easily become misaligned from the incredible pressure during the birth process. They have no other way to communicate this discomfort other than crying or other ‘fussy’ behavior.

Throughout infancy they will sleep in askew positions and have numerous tumbles as they grow into toddlers and children this continues as they learn how to crawl and walk, climb, straining and falling. Luckily, children can be resilient and can take a lot of impact, but it’s not uncommon for these injuries to turn into patterns of movement that will pull a child’s bones out of alignment over time, causing nervous interference.
